NATIONAL Leadership and Skills Conference Results

Carter Lewis – 1st Place High School CNC Technician

Matthew Rabel –2nd place High School CNC Milling Specialist

Mason Sell – 1st place Post-Secondary CNC Milling Specialist

At a very successful Indiana State SkillsUSA competition on April 17, all of our Area 18 SkillsUSA contestants placed in the top 3 for Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) contests. Immediately after our State competition, our 3 State champions began preparing for the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition in June.

June 2 started the National contest with Carter, Matthew and Mason taking an online Professional Development Test which quizzed them on Ethics, Parliamentary Procedures and SkillsUSA knowledge.

June 4 - all of the contestants were required to submit a professional quality resume.

June 8 and June 9 - the CNC programming part of the contest. Contestants were given part prints, tool lists and set up sheets for a part that they had to program by hand using G&M code. Contestants were required to use the packet provided to calculate missing coordinates using Geometry, Trigonometry and basic shop math. Once they had their calculations and strategy, they began their programming. Each contestant was given 4 hours to program the part perfectly using a Text Editor and Vericut (CNC verification software).

June 15 brought the “Written Test” part of the contest. This section consisted of a 90 minute National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) CNC Technology Test. The CNC Technology Test included many aspects of CNC machining, Manual Machining, Tooling, Metrology, Metallurgy, etc.

June 15 also included the “Process Control” NIMS test. Contestants were given 60 minutes to solve a variety of very difficult shop math questions. Many of the math questions were the type that in the real world machine shop, a machinist would use CAD to solve the problem, but the contestants could only use a calculator and scrap paper!

June 17 was Mock interview day. Each contestant was on Zoom for a 15-minute interview where they were quizzed on different aspects of their resume and how they would handle different situations. Much of the time involved the interviewer quizzing the contestant on how they would handle a real-life interview.

Carter and Matthew are both part of the South Adams High School Precision Machining class of 2021.

Carter is a graduate of South Adams High School and is planning to go to Purdue Fort Wayne to earn a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering while serving as a military reservist.

Matthew is a graduate of North Adams High School (Bellmont) and is planning to attend Purdue, West Lafayette campus. Matthew is currently working at Micromatic, LLC in Berne, Indiana as a machinist.

Mason is a 2018 graduate of South Adams High School. Mason is currently employed at Intri-Cut, Roanoke, IN where he works as a CNC Precision Machinist; setting up and operating a variety of manual and CNC machining equipment. Mason will be a Senior at Purdue University – Fort Wayne this fall where he will be completing his Mechanical Engineering Degree.

Austin McKibben – 8th Place High School CNC Turning Specialist

Mason Sell – 2nd place Post-Secondary CNC Milling Specialist

Luke Yoder 8th place High School CNC Milling Specialist

During the week of June 24, 2019, Austin McKibben, Luke Yoder, and Mason Sell participated at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Kentucky competing in separate CNC Specialist Competitions. Austin in CNC Turning (High School Level), Luke in the CNC Milling (High School Level), and Mason in the CNC Milling (College Level)

The main part of the contest was for competitors to program a HAAS CNC Simulator. Each was given 2 hours to use Trigonometry, Shop Math, and/or Geometry to calculate coordinates needed to program the HAAS CNC simulator according to the part print supplied. Austin had his Lathe contest on Wednesday while Luke and Mason competed in the Milling contest Thursday. After each contestant is finished with their program, it was graded using Vericut software and a HAAS CNC Applications Engineer randomly choose programs to run on an actual CNC machine.

The remainder of the contest included written tests, hands-on tasks, metrology, and a graded interview. The first test was GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), where they were tested on theory and application of symbols and rules commonly used by engineers and machinists. The next section was on process control, which included inspection of parts using tools such as depth micrometers, outside micrometer, protractors, and dial calipers. Then each contestant was tested on General Machining Knowledge, which can include any aspect of manual or CNC Machining and some really difficult math. Contestants were also scored on professionalism, official dress, and their resume during a mock interview.

Austin and Luke are both part of the South Adams High School class of 2020. After High School, Austin and Luke both plan to pursue a degree in Engineering. Mason is a 2018 graduate of South Adams High School. Mason is currently employed at Intri-Cut, Roanoke, IN where he works in their manual machining area; setting up and operating a variety of machining equipment. Mason will be a sophomore at Purdue University – Fort Wayne this fall where he will be pursuing a Mechanical Engineering Degree.

For placing 2nd in the Nation, Mason will receive a $3500 cash scholarship through the Gene Haas Foundation. Other prizes include: Skullcandy headphones from NIMS/HAAS ($90 value), $200 cash scholarship from Magna Corp, and Several books from Industrial Press including the 30th edition Machinery’s Handbook with CD/rom.

Luke and Austin both received $500 from the Gene Haas Foundation and Skullcandy headphones from NIMS/HAAS ($90 value)

State SkillsUSA (L) Mason Sell 1st CNC Mill (R) Keagan Yoder 2nd CNC Lathe

Congratulations to the Area 18 Precision Machine Class @ South Adams who participated in the Indiana State SkillsUSA Contestants that competed against the best in the state on Friday April 13 and Saturday April 14 in CNC Turning and CNC Milling Contests (CNC = Computer Numerical Controlled). Students were challenged with precision measurement and were given a blueprint for a part where they used Geometry, Trigonometry and Technical Shop Math to calculate all the missing points for the part. The contestants were given 2 hours to program each part for a HAAS CNC Simulator. Students had to make sure their program would run the simulator as it would in a real CNC Machine.

Results:

2nd place - Keagan Yoder - CNC Turning Specialist programmed a round part with contouring, grooving, and threading

1st place - Mason Sell -  CNC Milling Specialist programmed a rectangular part with contours and holes. Mason, a Senior at South Adams will be representing Indiana at the National Skills and Leadership Conference as a CNC Milling Specialist June 25-29 in Louisville Kentucky!!
